When Is a Certified Driving Licence Translation Required?

  • NDLS driving licence exchange: Non-EU/EEA drivers wishing to exchange their foreign driving licence at the NDLS must provide a certified English translation if the licence is not in English.

  • ISD and visa applications: Driving licences are sometimes required as supplementary identity documents in ISD applications and may need certified translation.

  • Court proceedings: Foreign driving licences submitted as evidence in Irish courts must be accompanied by a certified translation.

Do I need a translation to exchange my driving licence in Ireland?

If your driving licence is not in English or Irish and is from outside the EU/EEA, you need a certified translation to exchange it at the NDLS. The translation must include a signed Statement of Accuracy.
